Hush Tours

On a recent trip to New York I took the 'Birthplace Of Hip-Hop' tour with Hush Tours and Grandmaster Caz.

I'm lucky enough to have spent a lot of time in New York, I had family who lived out there for a number of years and I visited on many occasions. I got all the 'typical tourist' things out the way on my early visits which enabled me to explore the boroughs further and hunt down many of the various important Hip-hop landmarks. Whenever I'm in New York I pretty much always visit The 5 Pointz and the Spanish Harlem Graffiti Hall Of Fame, I have been lucky enough to have met Seen and Tats Crew, I saw Jam Master Jay play a small intimate gig and I attended the Wildstyle 20th Anniversary where I witnessed The Cold Crush Brothers perform live alongside Busy Bee. I love New York, riding the subway in the Bronx looking for graffiti and wandering the streets Lower Manhatten discovering new things.

I recently visited New York with a friend who had never been before and we decided to sign up for Hush Tours 'Birthplace Of Hip-Hop' tour. Hush Tours offer tours with a difference and you are actually taken around by the stars themselves and I think that is half the appeal! When we arrived at the pick up location in the morning (ever so slightly hung-over) we were met by J.D.L. from The Cold Crush Brothers and were shortly joined by the legendary Grandmaster Caz. The tour took us to various important locations in Hip-hop's history such as The Spanish Harlem Graffiti Hall Of Fame, The Appollo Theatre and Sedgwick Avenue and even though I have visited many of these places myself it was Grandmaster Caz's commentary which made all the difference. To have Caz on the bus you are actually hearing the tales from one of the pioneers who was there at the beginning of the movement, you hear the tales as to how Big Bank Hanks lyrics in Rappers Delight were actually written by and lifted from Grandmaster Caz and that Hank wasn't even a rapper at all!

At the Spanish Harlem Hall Of Fame we were even met B-Boy Mighty Mouse for an impromptu lesson in B-Boying and so audience participation on this trip is a must!

All in all I would say it was a really good tour, whether you are interested in Hip-hop or not, but the highlight of the trip is definitely being guided about by Grandmaster Caz and the trip is worth doing just to experience him and his tales!

Hush Tours gets the big thumbs up from me!
