Kaikoura, New Zealand Diary Entry

Date Posted: 21/01/2006

Got up on early and headed down to the dolphin swimming. Had to go out 30 minutes on the boat to get to where the dolphins are and on the way passed a baby humpback whale which was a pretty rare sight apparently. Kiakoura is pretty mad, you only have to travel out a short distance in the boat and the sea level drops to 1500+ metres in minutes due to an underwater canyon... mental! The guide on the boat told us to get ready in our wetsuits as the fist pod of dolphins had been spotted and as we passed the pod my jaw dropped, I kid you not there was 250 to 300 dolphins all swimming about and we got dropped off right in front of them and they just swam round us, under us, jumping, back flipping and doing somersaults... it was off the hook! We got in the water 4 times with various pods all of them not smaller than 200+ strong. At one point I had a dolphin swim with me for about 5 minutes, playing games and circling me, it was really amazing and felt so special seeing as these animals are totally wild! Came back from the dolphin swimming trip with a great big beaming smile and an hour later headed out to go whale watching which was another success! Our boat managed to spot 5 sperm whales... I had a full on day of marine life!
